10 reviews for The Housemaid: An absolutely addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist

      1. Krishna K.

I have read few other crime thrillers earlier but none could get me as indulged in the book as this did. The pacing of the book is right at the point. I didn’t feel like it took long to read and that’s pretty impressive, mentioning how other books let me down half way through it. The twists though predictable, gave way for awe. I am really looking forward to read other of the author’s writings. For new readers, this must definitely be your start.

Book : The HousemaidAuthor : Frieda McfaddenGenre : Psychological thriller FictionThis book had me hooked to it from the first few pages itself. Brilliant story with breathtaking plot twists. The character development is done beautifully done. Author managed to keep me go on and finish the book in 2 days itself. All in all I highly recommend this book who love reading psycological thrillers and I am highly looking forward to read the part 2 of this series.Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

It’s a really good read. My favourite thriller so far. The quality it arrived in was perfect too, my only issue would be on some pages you could see the print of the previous page, (translucent pages). One would expect more from a Penguin bestseller book.

“The Housemaid” by Frieda McFadden, is a domestic thriller, that revolves around Millie who is just out of jail and is living in a car and in desperate need of a job. She lands a housemaid’s job at the Winchester’s, where she’s forced to live out of a no-window attic room, follow orders from a maniac boss, put up with her tantrum-throwing kid, and battle with her growing attraction for Andrew, Nina’s husband. The book introduces the reader to a whole horde of characters that evolve in surprising ways. The characters are quite compelling and believable, ranging from being annoying to creepy to irrational to reckless. A good thriller thrives on the tension created by characters who blur the lines between good and bad, and this book does not disappoint in challenging readers’ presumptions, if any.The plot leads readers to an alluring suspense without divulging too much. It follows two separate narratives – one of Nina Winchester and other that of Millie and this tactic proves to be a strong choice, exposing the inner workings of the characters’ minds. The gradually rising tempo of the plot keeps the readers hooked until the last page and it sure does its part to put this book on the page-turners’ list. But the coincidences that line the events are too unreal and bit too convenient and thus unconvincing. The ending was pretty predictable too and that took away most of the thrill the novel manages to create since the start. The eerie atmosphere that pervades through the most part is quite as captivating as the plot itself, and works really well to build the tension and amplify it keeping readers engaged. The end is a bit of a downer, especially, the core premise to keep the series going, is terribly far-fetched. Despite minor disappointments, the novel succeeds in keeping the readers desperate for the upcoming novels in the series. The Housemaid is a psychological thriller that’s dark, creepy, with complicated characters, a twisted tale, and gobs of twists and turns to keep one engaged. Lovers of contemporary thrillers will find it unputdownable as it sure is engaging enough to flash past a dull day.

The twist in the story in the second part is really enthralling. Loved reading this story. Plan to read the other stories by the same author. I recommend this book.

It was just okay… mini spoiler in my reviewThis was the first book I brought when I got my Kindle. I put it off for so long and finally started to read it TWO WEEKS AGO! This is my first book read from this author even though I brought four of her books. It was a simple enough writing style that it made for an “easy” read. This story follows Millie, an ex-con who’s living in her car and looking for work. Nina hires her to help clean and watch her bratty daughter. This book is suppose to be a psychological thriller, but it was more of a contemporary thriller. This is about an abused wife trying to escape and getting some revenge. The way it was tickled in I disliked. I was easily put off by Nina’s mistreatment of Millie and that led to me putting the book down for over a week . I guess I finally found a “trigger”. Wealthy people getting off on mistreating their workers burned me deep in my soul. No matter what the intent was , her turning cruel to someone else and setting them up for it is a terrible thing. I get the author’s intent was to take you to that place and bring you back with shock, but I don’t forget and I rarely forgive so I disliked Nina and never felt for her even after so finished the book. When they switched to Nina’s pov, I put the book down again. I tried each day to read but didn’t get past more than one page . Tonight I forced myself to finish this book. I will say when they switched back to Millie’s pov it picked back up and I started enjoying it again. I didn’t like how choppy the storylines were and the way they lingered the mistreatment of Millie for most of the book while giving us rushed events throughout wasn’t planned well. I’d still recommend this to someone who is looking for a domestic violence story where the ex gets her revenge. I like where the author is taking Millie’s storyline though.

      10. Helen

A thrilling book full of twists and turns.I really enjoyed this, it was dark and a bit twisted, but quite humorous in places as well, I really liked Millie, and once we heard things from her POV I liked Nina as well. I still saw the twist coming, but not all the details of it, so I really enjoyed all the different directions this book took towards the end. This wasn’t as dark as the thrillers I usually like to read, so I found it easy reading and read the entire book in one day, I will definitely be trying the next book in the series.
