C RAMAMOHAN –
The author Radhakrishna Pillai having a Master’s degree in Sanskrit and a PnD in Kautilya’s Arthashasatra says in introduction “ Writing this book has been one fo my most difficult projects till date. I have written over 15 books on Chanakya….But writing commentary on each verse in this book was a challenge in itself”.There are more than 300 verses covered in 10 chapters, spiritualwisdom, worldly wisdom, learning, wealth, interpersonal relations, spirit of the times, everything beneficial, sinister elements, Dos and Don’t.Chanakya wrote 6000 sutras meant for kings. So he wrote another book ‘Chanakya Neeti’ for common man. The author says that the English translation of original Sanskrit test was done by R K Sharma which was used as reference by Pillai. By reading the verse in English itself, we can understand most of the meaning. Pillai took one step further by writing commentary to each verse in English, with day to day examples from life and made it easy to understand by everyone.Pillai says that ‘Chanakya Neeti’ means those methods that one can use to get one’s desired results or outcomes’.In the opening verse Chanakya says “surrender your ego and bow to Lord Vishnu and continues “darkness is not about the absence of light in the physical sense; the real darkness is ignorance – about the world and oneself. So at the worldly level, one should be well read and well informed”. Chanakya wants us to be worldly wise so that others won’t be able to fool us.In the chapter Spiritual Wisdom he says “you do not get what you desire but what you deserve”. The verse 2.10 says “Egoism gets dissolved in the knowledge of the Supreme Soul. There wherever the mind goes there it meets the ultimate goal. Each verse was further divided into small sentences and was explained by the author with his commentary. You will understand the difference between being alone and being lonely. He says, there is no guarantee that you will be born again, so better make good use of your life by serving others. The chapter Worldly Wisdom says about how to lead life in the world, without getting distracted and reach your goal. What is right time, right friend, right place, right means of income, right ways of spending and what is your real strength, what is greed, what is betrayal and other virtues and characters are explained to lead a life by not falling into bad paths and there by avoiding the loss. The chapters on Learning covers the purpose of education, knowledge, who is a real scholar. He told about the virtues a man can learn from lion, crane, crow, cock, cow, dog and donkey. In the chapter Wealth, the value, purpose the ways and means to earn money and wealth and how to distribute them and to whom and there by leading a comfortable life is explained. The chapter on Interpersonal relations tells us how a man should behave with others, own people, the good, the wicked, scholars, enemies, elderly and with women. How to bring up children and your associates, the qualities of a good society, whom to avoid, whom to keep in the company are told with good commentary which are essential for a man to lead comfortably life by maintaining good relations. The Spirit of time of tells about the spiritual things like what are sins, what is heaven what is a fulfilled life.Everything Beneficial tells us about the benefits the man gets by having a virtuous son, affectionate wife, the company of good people, one’s guru’s words, friendship and their values.Sinister Elements tells us, what is poison, who’s is a wicked person, what is foolishness, what is a worthless place, whom to avoid. The chapters Dos and Don’t tells us list of things that we can follow in our day to day life like use of prayers, study, work etc., their purpose and how to do them.In the last Chanakya prays Lord Rama and says “profound wisdom sets a man apart from his peers; he no longer craves for material possession”.It’s not a book that one can read it in one go and leave it. To get the real benefit one should keep referring it when one is in dial-am or in doubt, to boost his morale, confidence and to lead a comfortable and meaningful life.I appreciate the effort put in by Sri R K Sarma and Sri Radhakrishna Pillai in translating the verses of Chanakya into English with meaningful commentary and there by making Chanakya Neeti available to many readers in the world.

Chanakya Niti: Strategies for Success is written by Radhakrishnan Pillai. He has written 15 books till now. Chanakya was born in the 4th century B.C. Chanakya was also called Vishnugupta, and Kautilya. His father’s name was Chanak. He was the advisor of Dhanananda, King of Maghad. Chanakya wrote Arthashatra for Kings. And Chanakya Niti for common people like us. Dhanananda was a corrupt king. So that people were unhappy with him. Chanak told about his corruption to the Public and because of that Chanak was murdered and Chanakya had to flee to Takshashila. In Takshashila he became the teacher of political science like his father. He came back to Patilputra, the Capital of Magadh to take revenge.Chanakya says, he wrote Chanakya Niti for the welfare of the common people. He says you should be self-aware. Think with your head, not your heart. This does not mean you should not have emotions. it just means don’t let your emotions influence your decisions. He also says to read the scriptures daily. It makes you strong spiritually and internally. Scriptures contain a code of conduct. Scriptures were not written by ordinary people. It is written by great Rishis.Chanakya says show gratitude in life. Be prayerful and serve others. so that you become happy. Be content in life whatever it is. Have faith in yourself. Without faith, we don’t have the motivation to move forward. That’s why faith is important. People see the same things differently because of their perspective. The person who sees God everywhere is wise and noble. God is omnipresent. One should be calm in every situation. He should be in his control. The man should be content with his life. It should be from within. No external situation can make men happy. Don’t be greedy. If you become greedy you will become unsatisfied. God is in each person. Treat each person with respect. Chanakya says work hard towards your goals. Count your blessings. Let the things which are not in your control left to destiny. Leave in the present moment and have an egoless mind. Master your mind. Control your thoughts. Do meditation. If you conquer the mind, you conquer the world. Acquire knowledge. Read books but implement what you read in your life. Never be angry because anger burns yourself. Enjoy your own company, because you were born alone and you will die alone. The book is good to read. It is written in simple English. I enjoyed the book.

Essence and truths of this book will stay with me for the rest of my life. If you want to be a prostitute, you can’t be shy. If you are shy, you need to learn not to be shy or find another profession. Same is the case for every profession. Either you need to have/learn the necessary skills or find another profession.Above is not a quote from the book. Just my thoughts after reading the book Chanakya Neeti.I am extremely grateful to Dr. Radhakrishnan Pillai for writing “Chanakya Neeti” in simple English. Ever grateful to the guru Chanakya for creating United India (Akhand Bharat) and guiding countless leaders of the past, present and future. I am fascinated by books depicting the wisdom of the ancient past. I read and reread Meditations written by Marcus Aurelius. And also, Artha Shastra and Chanakya Neeti. The humor and bluntness (if you can call it that) of Chanakya Neeti cracked me up. The essence and truths of this book will stay with me for the rest of my life.Chanakya aka Kautilya aka Vishnu Gupta is one of the greatest philosophers and strategists ever produced by the world. He lived in 4th century BC India. He wrote 2 books (scriptures), Artha Shastra and Chanakya Neeti. I couldn’t relate to major portions of Artha Shastra. But I understand the alleged actions of Indian spies, based on Artha Shastra. We all can relate to and learn a lot from Chanakya Neeti.
