      Product description

First published in the summer of 1949, George Orwell?s 1984 is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. This delectable leather-bound edition, beautifully crafted and elegantly designed, comes with a ribbon bookmark, gilded edges, and beautiful endpapers. Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstate that divided the world among themselves after a global war, Orwell?s masterful critique of the political structures of the time works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government. As much as it is an entertaining read, 1984 is also a brilliant, and more importantly, a timeless satirical attack on the social and political structures of the world.

      1. Vanishri

“It is an excellent dystopian novel with connections to the modern day and deep themes; however, the sexual content is continuous and explicit, discussing pleasure and how naked bodies look. The main character lusts after a woman, and about halfway through the book it becomes seriously depressing.” – Common Sense Media

“1984” by George Orwell is a chilling portrayal of a totalitarian society where individual freedom is obliterated and surveillance reigns supreme. Orwell’s prophetic vision of a dystopian future feels eerily relevant even decades after its publication. The novel follows Winston Smith, a man who dares to defy the oppressive regime, as he grapples with the consequences of rebellion and the power of thought control. Orwell’s mastery of language and world-building creates a haunting atmosphere that lingers long after the final page. While the bleakness of the narrative may be unsettling, its message about the dangers of authoritarianism and the importance of truth resonates deeply. “1984” is a thought-provoking and unforgettable exploration of the human spirit in the face of tyranny.

It’s a political satire on the social and governmental structure of that time ( god knows which time……dystopian future ), story is basically based in Oceania. The whole book is written from the point of view of Winston Smith ( what he think about people around him , what he feels about them, and most importantly how much he supports the government for whom he work) . Yes this Guy is working for the government , manipulating articles and news which were against the political party in power ( Big Brothers ). Not only this but all the information which might go against the government was eradicated (like dinosaurs are from the face of earth) as if it never existed ( did i tell you it includes people as well ). As the story progress he comes into a clandestine (meaning : done secretively, especially because illicit) love relation with Julia.I am not much of a fan of politics ( in fact i hate it ). So when i started the book i have this resentment in my mind that i should not like this book and in case i end up liking this book then i might turn into one of those boring people who switch on the TV only to watch which political leader is up to what or who looks for political news in newspaper (thank god there is no newspaper specifically related to politics, wait is it…..). That’s why i wasn’t able to enjoy the book during first few initial pages but as i flip through few of them i was taken aback by the those witty and humorous lines. It took me a while to put myself in to the shoes of Winston Smith. But once i was able to understand what he was going through, i enjoyed being him.I was pretty much impressed by the writing style of the author. It’s very intriguing and engaging. I love the formation of sentences and dialogues. I love the rich vocabulary that author poses ( i wish i had his brain ) . I come across so many amusing words that i was tantalised by the book.I love the sub plots in the book more as compared to the main one ( guess what might be the reason behind it ….. politics ) like Winston writing his diary , his love affair , conversations with his neighbours ( and their children ) . Never the less it took in a while to complete the book because most of the part in the book talks about this political party in power ( Big Brother ). Their actions, repercussions, ugly things they are involved in , and the stir they are creating. It made me lose interest in the book. I guess the only reason it didn’t turn out to be that good experience for me is my disinterest in politics. So if your are interested into politics even a little bit then only go for this book otherwise come on we have plenty of books to read. :)

Brilliant political novelsIMHO, George Orwell wrote two great political novels; Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949).Writing a critique about Britain’s social stratification and economic inequality in Animal Farm. And, the dangers of the corruption of the revolution. Whilst warning about the great existential threat of authoritarianism in the later story 1984.In this novel, the author does an excellent job of imagining what ordinary people endure in a modern totalitarian state e.g. Soviet Russia in the past and North Korea today. The deification of the great leader.Mind control through the manipulation of culture (Hate Week), language (Newspeak) and memory (redacting history). In a mere dictatorship, the masses are cowed by the threat of violence. In the 20th Century, total control would ensure total obedience because people would have no other point of reference. Ordinary people are turned against each other. Dissidents become fervent believers in the state. In a world full of conflict and fear, there is the great temptation of creating an Islamist state, fundamentalist society, or super empire. One ring to rule them all!!!!

      11. Harry Boxx

1984 still relevant today. The year has long since passed and gone. But this book still resonates today. One of the benchmarks in English literature, it really should be on everybody’s book shelf (or kindle).Gripping. Still contemporary. For newcomers to the book, it is easy to read and understand. A real page-turner.
